Susan Akiyama

As a Housing Specialist, Susan administered the County’s employment and training program. She then moved on to manage the Grants Division of the Housing Office and then as Assistant Administrator where she was responsible for the day to day operations and presently as Housing Administrator, over a span of 12 years. Currently, Susan is responsible for the planning, administration and operations of all County Housing programs such as the Section 8 program and oversees over $17,000,000 annually in federal grants from the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Dept. of Labor.

A graduate of the University of Puget Sound in Business Administration and Marketing, Susan started her work career in Florida for more than a decade in the private sector of international cut flower brokering and wholesale business.  Susan’s skills helped hone her family’s tropical flower business both locally and expanded abroad. She later found herself back in Hilo where she was born. Susan then decided to take a different career path as an Employment and Training counselor for the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations – Workforce Development Division for five years before moving to County Government.
